For survivors and their families, the effects of Joplin tornado continue

Nearly one year ago, Dave Griffith's niece and her two children were at home, unaware that the next few minutes would turn their world upside down.


The tornado that devastated Joplin blew out the window's of Trisha Ann Lara's second-floor apartment. She and her two children, then ages 11 and 13, climbed into their bathtub to wait out the onslaught.


"It's a miracle that they're alive today and we're blessed that they are," Griffith said.


Griffith, the executive director of the Heart of America chapter of the American Red Cross, said that his family is still dealing with the effects of the tornado.
