JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's highway department says it spent more than $49 million removing snow and ice from state roads and bridges this winter.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the cost was about 20 percent higher than the annual winter average of $41 million.

The department says it used nearly 228,000 tons of salt this past winter, and its workers put in more than 631,000 hours clearing roads.

The winter road season included a major Christmas storm that affected most of Missouri, and an unusual snow storm that hit parts of the state on the first official day of spring.
