Wednesday night was a good time to make last minute preparations for Thursday's winter storm. We'll see several inches of sleet and snow, followed by some ice.
The winter storm was slowing last night, which delayed the start of any precipitation until around sunrise Thursday. It's also trending colder, so I've increased some of the snow totals.
The heaviest of the snow should begin by sunrise if not a bit earlier. This storm system has a lot of energy, and that means the snow will fall quickly.
As warmer air from the south overrides the cold air, sleet will begin to mix in and a heavy wintry mix should take over by the late morning and early afternoon hours. Colder air will begin to return by the late afternoon/early evening, leaving light snow/flurries and freezing drizzle in its wake.
Total snow accumulations for much of the viewing area will be between two and four inches, with more snow possible along and north of Interstate 70 (between four and ten inches). Ice accumulations look to be highest south of Jefferson City, with one-tenth of an inch to two-tenths of an inch possible.
There is a chance for thunder with this winter system. Just like any thunderstorm will increase rain totals, this thundersnow or thundersleet will greatly enhance those totals if heard in your location.
The amount of ice associated with this system will greatly alter the total snowfall accumulations. This is one reason why there is a wide range of totals. Regardless, roads will be very slick and those thinking about traveling should avoid it if possible.
