COLE COUNTY -- A 2-year-old is in Children's Division custody after being found overnight on a Cole County street.

A 12-year-old girl heard a child crying outside her window around 1:30 a.m. and could see a boy wandering the 3900 block Dewberry Road. She told her parents, who brought the boy into their home and called the sheriff's department.

Deputies said the child was in good health, fully clothed and had no signs of abuse.

T
hey searched the neighborhood for hours, but no one knew the child.

At about 4:00 a.m., a woman called dispatch and said she was the legal guardian of a child who was missing.

She said she left the toddler in the care of a friend's 13-year-old son at about 10 p.m.

The teen said while he was babysitting, he fell sleep around 11 p.m. and the toddler must have gotten out of the apartment.

The toddler remains in custody of the Children's Division pending the outcome of this investigation.
