COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Columbia fire officials are reporting a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon that extensively damaged a duplex.
Officials say the fire was reported at 2:35 p.m. at the 4500 block of Rice Road.
Crews say an occupant originally called the owner of the duplex, saying that they smelled smoke around their building. One of the owners shortly afterward discorver fire in the laundry room and told the occupant to call 9-1-1.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the front door and garage of a two-story duplex.
Once all occupants were safely out of the building, crews went in and attacked the fire with a single hose line. They brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
Fire officials determined that the fire originated from one of the clothes dryers in the laundry room.
The duplux sustained $30,000 worth of damage the the affected areas of the duplex, which included fire and smoke damage to the laundry room and the family room on the first floor. On the second floor, three bedrooms and a bathroom sustained smoke damage.
Crews say the building did have smoke alarms.
