(AP) -- KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Kansas City police are reminding residents it's illegal to shoot firearms to celebrate the New Year's holiday or any other holiday.

An 11-year-old Kansas City girl was killed by celebratory gunfire on July 4th, 2011. Blair Shanahan-Lane died after she was hit by a shot fired into the air some distance away.

Kansas City police say in a release that it's illegal to fire a gun in the city limits any day of the year and that they received calls about nearly 150 shots over the last New Years' Eve holiday. Police say officers will arrest anyone caught shooting a firearm into the air.

Chief Darryl Forti also says residents should be able to celebrate the holiday safely without fear of being hit by a stray bullet.
