A 28-year-old Auxvasse man was killed early Thursday in what may have been self defense.

Callaway County Prosecutor Chris Wilson said he plans to look at witness statements, evidence and autopsy results before making any decision about filing criminal charges.

The incident occurred on South Main Street in Auxvasse. State troopers and deputies responded at 12:50 a.m., then interviewed the self-confessed shooter and witnesses. Benjamin Harris was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound at the scene.

The shooter called authorities, saying he shot someone. Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane said the shooter knew Harris, and that the two were at the Auxvasse Bar Wednesday night playing pool when they had an argument. The shooting was the result of another altercation that happened after the men left the bar.
