A surprise snowstorm has blanketed Mid-Missouri causing dozens of accidents and delays for motorists on highways, roads and streets.

Parts of Interstate 70 and Highway 63 were at a standstill this morning in Columbia as commuters battled slick roads.

State, County and Columbia City snow plow drivers have been out since 5 a.m. spreading salt and clearing roads.

Columbia emergency crews responded to several injuries accidents due to the hazardous conditions.

I-70 Towing and Recovery Truck Drivers have been swamped responding to calls on Columbia’s highways and streets.

I-70 Towing and Recovery Owner John Berghager said, “There are people off in the ditches.  There are a few fender benders.  Most people have been caught off guard by that little skip of snow and they are off in the ditch.”

Routes WW and K in Boone County were shut down earlier this morning due to several accidents.

State, County and City crews continue to clear the roads all across Mid-Missouri.

Update: Tuesday, December 6th at 9:00 a.m.:

Dozens of new accidents have been reported.

MoDOT said Highway 63 and Interstate 70 are both in poor condition. MoDOT advises drivers to avoid those areas if possible, especially around the Highway 63 and Interstate 70 interchange.

Original Story:

Winter is just about two weeks away, but Mid-Missouri is seeing it's first "measurable" snow of the season.

A disturbance in the upper levels over the plains is combining with limited moisture to produce Tuesday's light snow.

Most of the area will just see a dusting to maybe half an inch of snowfall.

A few locations between interstate 70 and Jefferson City could receive between .5"-1".

Roads will likely be a bit slick as the snow should taper off by this afternoon, with possibly a few flurries left over.

Cold and dry weather will take over for the rest of the week.
