KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — The PGA Tour season is under way without the two-time defending champion at Kapalua.
Geoff Ogilvy announced an hour before the Tournament of Champions began that 12 stitches near the knuckle of his right index finger would prevent him from going for a third straight title.
In clearing skies over Maui, Arjun Atwal of India hit the opening tee shot, a 307-yard drive down the rolling fairway. He followed that up by making a 40-foot putt for the first birdie of the 2011 season.
The 33-man field at Kapalua is only for PGA Tour winners from the year before. FedEx Cup champion Jim Furyk is in the last group alone because Ogilvy had to withdraw.
Ogilvy still receives $53,000 that will not count toward the money list. He gets no points toward the FedEx Cup.
