METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints coach Sean Payton says starting cornerback Jabari Greer is expected to miss the next three games while recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Greer has not played since Nov. 8 against the Carolina Panthers, a game he left with what was initially diagnosed as a left groin pull.

Payton says it was not immediately clear that the injury was serious enough to require more than rest. Then the team decided this week that it would make more sense for Greer to have the surgery now and be fully healthy for the playoffs rather than have him try to play through the injury.

Payton says the hope is to have Greer back for the regular season finale in Carolina on Jan. 3.
