AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Phil Mickelson makes his return to the PGA Tour in what he calls a "much better place" after a summer of watching his wife and mother cope with breast cancer.

Mickelson chose not to elaborate on the condition of his wife, Amy, and his mother, Mary. He said only that the prognosis for recovery is as good as it could have been.

He has not played since his runner-up finish at the U.S. Open, two weeks before his wife had surgery. Mickelson will play the Bridgestone Invitational this week, then play the final major of the year next week at the PGA Championship.
