The Missouri Department of Transportation's director resigned Thursday because of a medical issue, which has not been disclosed.

Kevin Keith's medical leave of absence became effective immediately, and his resignation will become effective July 1.

David Nichols, chief engineer, will serve as interim director for at least one year, according to Joe Carmichael, chairman of the Highways and Transportation Commission. Nichols has been with MoDOT for 29 years.

"The commission is very confident in Dave's ability to carry MoDOT forward in all respects," Carmichael said.

Keith was the chief engineer before being named director in November 2010. He worked for MoDOT for more than 25 years.
