COLUMBIA -- Columbia Police arrested a 25-year-old man Monday afternoon after he robbed a department store and assaulted a security guard.

Police said that at about 1:15 p.m, officers were called to the Kohl's Department store on Green Meadows Road for a shoplifter.

When officers got to the scene, Jeffery Davis was detained by two off duty officers.

Store security guards told authorities they saw David take three pairs of pants into the dressing room and then left the store with the pants.

The guards tried to stop Davis as he walked out of the store, but Davis tried to push through them and then grabbed one of the guards around his throat.

After Davis let go of the guard's throat, he pulled out a knife; but didn't hurt anyone with it.

Davis was arrested for armed criminal action, first degree robbery, second degree assault and a felony probation and parole warrant for an original charge of forgery with a no bond.

After Davis was arrested, the stolen merchandise was found underneath his clothes.
