(AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit on behalf of several women who claim their fundamental right to marry was denied when their weddings could not be performed at a Missouri prison.
The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday claims a new policy at the Jefferson City Correctional Center requires all visitors to fill out a form disclosing their Social Security numbers. It says the women were unable to marry inmates because Cole County Recorder of Deeds Larry Rademan refused to provide his Social Security number. As a result, the lawsuit says, Rademan was not allowed into the prison to witness the inmates' signatures on their marriage applications.
The Missouri Department of Corrections declined to comment about the policy, citing the lawsuit.
Rademan did not immediately return telephone messages Tuesday.
