It was another good week of mid-Missouri high school football. My pick for biggest win of the week goes to Helias. The Crusaders dominated a good Rock Bridge team with a 35-14 win Saturday night. Helias is still unbeaten on the season at 6-0. For the first and only time this season we'll get to see Helias play a home Friday night game. We'll preview the Crusaders game against Beaumont on our Mike Kehoe Football Friday Night preview at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Most exciting finish has to go to the Blair Oaks Falcons, who scored a game winning touchdown with less than a minute to play. Blair Oaks edged past a good Versailles Tiger team on the road last Friday night.
We were also impressed with the Hickman Kewpies. The Kewpies stayed close to the state's second ranked Rockhurst Hawklets in Kansas City last Friday night. Hickman lost 27-14.The Jefferson City Jays, coming off an easy homecoming win over Sumner, will travel to the Rock for a rematch this Friday night.
Six area teams remain unbeaten after six weeks of football. Helias is joined by the Centralia Panthers, who pounded Mark Twain 56-12 last Friday. That was the last team with a winning record on the Panthers schedule. 10-0 looks like a very good possibility in Centralia! The Tipton Cardinals came up with a big win at North Callaway. The Gridbirds may be on their way to another perfect regular season. The Westran Hornets had a battle at Southern Boone. The Eagles nearly handed Westran its first loss of 2009, but the Hornets held on to win 20-16. Southern Boone will host North Callaway in our Feature Game of the Week. Make sure to vote on who you think will win this Friday night. Two other mid-Missouri teams improved to 6-0 on the season with big shutout wins.
No problem for the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers, who clobbered KC Center 47-0 on homecoming. The Tigers are aiming for back to back 10-0 seasons. The Rolla Bulldogs keep winning. Rolla routed West Plains last week 48-0.
Looking forward to week number 7 this Friday night. These are the final games before district play begins.
This is a great week for sports!
Along with all of our high school coverage, we also have the big MU-Nebraska game on Thursday night in Columbia...and Cardinal playoff baseball.
Enjoy the week...it's a good time to be a fan!
