Alcohol may have had something to do with a double fatality on Highway 68.
On Monday afternoon, members of the Maries County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a truck had overturned and one occupant was ejected. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the truck was transported to Phelps County Hospital and later pronounced dead. Names are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Sheriff’s deputies found open alcohol containers around the accident site and suspect alcohol is a contributing factor.
In a statement, the Sheriff's office said: "We are fortunate that no one else was injured in this accident. This is exactly why the Maries County Sheriff’s Office takes a tough stand on drinking and driving. There are too many people being killed by drunk drivers, so please be responsible -- Don’t Drink and Drive!"
