The Illinois State Police contacted the Jefferson City Police Department on Thursday about a wanted person hiding in Jefferson City.

The man, known to be armed and wanted on a federal indictment for distribution of crack cocaine, was believed to not only be in Jefferson City, but was also potentially a suspect in shots-fired calls in the capitol.

The man's current residence was quickly located, with surveillance set up by the Community Action Team. The SWAT team was also notified.

When the surveillance team determined the suspect was home, Jefferson City detectives and the SWAT team served a search/arrest warrant and found the man.

As the warrant was being served, the suspect tried to escape out of a side deck area, when he encountered armed SWAT members. He then threw the handgun he was holding. He went back inside and was arrested by other SWAT personnel who entered the residence.

The suspect, 22-year-old James A. Tatum of 106 East Franklin Street, was taken into custody for the Federal Narcotics Indictment.

No one was injured during the warrant service, and no other charges are pending at this time.
