Jefferson City one step closer to replacing a tax

Jefferson City is one step closer to having a tax change put on the August ballot.
Monday night the council heard an ordinance that would change the way the fire department pension is funded.
If voters approve, city property taxes will go down by 17 percent, that tax would be replaced with a quarter percent sales tax.
Lonnie Brandt, Assistant Fire Chief said, "We have a dedicated property tax that's been around since 1947. We believe that tax has kind of served it's purpose and by eliminating it and substituting it with a sales tax would serve the department better in what we're trying to do to improve the services in Jefferson City".
No word on how the money leftover from the pension would be spent.
The sales tax would expire in 15 years.
At the next council meeting we should know if it will be placed on the august ballot.
