Good news Monday night for some of the Columbia School Districts lowest paid workers.

The school district said its getting harder to keep employees despite the bad economy.

The starting pay for a custodian is just $8.74 per hour.

Under the new salary schedule approved by the board Monday evening they will start making about $9.00 per hour as a base pay rate.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Dr. Dana Clippard said, "We are not where we want to be even with some of these recommendations. Some of our employee groups are significantly below local market value and if anything this just helps us be competitive within the city of Columbia and bring some of them to the average of some of our local competitors".

In the end it is about the same increase teachers got which was 1.81%.

The board also approved 39 new positions at a cost of about $2.9 million thanks to a new referendum that voters passed last week.
