COLUMBIA, MO. -- Mizzou Officials held 3 separate ceremonies to honor our service men and women on this Veteran’s Day.
All 3 events took place at the University’s Memorial Union.
University Officials first dedicated the American War Mothers’ Memorial back in 1930 to honor 117 University of Missouri students who lost their lives in World War I. Workers removed the stone in 1987 when they widened Rollins Street. MU Chancellor Brady Deaton rededicated the stone at its new site just east of Memorial Union.
Deaton said, “The site was chosen as fitting because the Missouri University heroes spent so many happy hours here at the University of Missouri. It was hollowed ground for them and it remains hollowed ground for all of us.”
Mizzou Officials then held their annual Veteran’s Day Wreath Laying ceremony. Mizzou Graduate and Air Force Veteran Dan Sewell remembered those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Sewell said, “We gather here to recognize Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard veterans who have sacrificed both in war and in peace to protect America and the American way of life.”
The Mizzou Veteran’s Day ceremonies finished with the unveiling of a Forever Purple Heart postage stamp now available at your local post office.
Columbia Postmaster Pamela Davis said, “It is our hope that with the issuance of this stamp the postal service along with the rest of our nation can pay tribute to those whose sacrifices have given all of us a country that is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
Everyone is invited to see the movie “Captain America” at Mizzou’s Memorial Union tonight at 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m.
Admission is free for veterans and $1 for all others.
