COLUMBIA, MO. -- Boone County Treasurer Nicole Galloway launched the state’s first county Unclaimed Property Website.
All of the unclaimed property is checks issued by the county that remain uncashed.
Some of them are refund checks written to citizens or checks to vendors for services.
Checks become unclaimed property if they are outstanding for 180 days or more.
Galloway currently has $50,000 worth of unclaimed property in 3,000 accounts.
Galloway said, “It could be a refund check that was sent to an address and the citizen has moved, the forwarding address has expired or it might have gone to the wrong address. It’s important to remember that money never becomes the property of the county.”
After being held for 3 years by Galloway, Boone County unclaimed property checks are turned over to State Treasurer Clint Zweifel where they are held forever until claimed.
