An old diet trend is getting new attention.

The HCG diet is being used by many at weight loss centers around the country.

It was popular in the 1950's and just fell out of graces in 70's, some say because it's dangerous.

Our Facebook fans wanted to know more.

So KRCG's Facebook Crew talked with experts to find out more about the diet.

"I've lost 31 pounds in 7 weeks. I'm almost finished with it and I hope to lose another five to six pounds. I have lots of energy, I’m not hungry, and i just feel great,” Camdenton Resident Lydia Myers said.

Myers takes HCG or Human Chronic Gonadotropin in droplets under her tongue.

It's a protein based hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary.

But supporters tell me it also helps you lose weight fast.

"HCG is a hormone and it metabolizes your stored fats, so you don't feel hungry. So it's easy to stick to it,” Myers said.

The diet also requires you to only take in 500 calories a day.

A dietitian with the Jefferson City Medical Group said that's what causes the weight loss, not the hormone.

She tells me the HCG low calorie diet can be very dangerous.

"Our concern is the fact that people are unaware of the risks they're taking by following a 500 calorie food base plan. In fact it's those types of diets that we're associated with death and cardiac abnormalities in the early 1970's,” JCMG's Lisa Finley, R.D., L.D said.

Finley said that there have been more than 24 studies done on the HCG diet, and everyone one of them showed it doesn't work.

That's why she said the FDA has not approved HCG for weight loss.

But Myers tells me she is going to continue with it.

"Nothing has worked for me. This absolutely worked for me. I have never been able to stay on a diet for 7 weeks and I absolutely can with this because I don't feel deprived or hungry,” Myers said. “I am just very happy with it."

new diet is being touted by some as amazing, and by others as a myth and dangerous -- only the diet isn't so new.

The HCG diet is used at weight loss centers around the country and was developed in the 50s, but fell out of grace in the 70s. Now, it's back. Many say the diet, along with a change in eating habits and exercise can give great results to motivated weight-loss seekers.

Opponents of the diet, though, say the 500 calorie food restrictions, and putting a pregnancy hormone into your body when not pregnant is dangerous.

Tonight at 10, KRCG investigates the HCG diet and finds out what Mid-Missourians think of the program.
