JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- These days we depend on email more than ever, its on our phones, its at work, and really it's just how we live.
But now more than ever thieves are looking to take advantage. With just your name and access to your email account thieves can give you some big headaches.
If you get emails from your bank, a thief could call your bank, tell them you forgot your online login or password and ask them to send a new one via email. Then all the thief has to do is access your email, and they could potentially access to your new bank account login or password.
Doug Ommen with the Missouri Attorney Generals Office said there is actually good news for Missourians, "We're really not seeing email solicitations as the primary source for for complaints involving fraud, we do from time to time receive consumer complaints expressing concern over advertising and solicitation".
Basically Ommen said email fraud isn't a major problem here in Missouri yet.
He went on to say consumers do need to have good computer security installed. But the big thing to remember, don't respond to or even open emails if you aren't sure who they're from.
Original Story:
In the old days thieves would go dumpster diving to get your bank statements and credit card information. Those days are long gone since technology has made email the prime target to get your private information.
In today's Facebook story of the day, we'll find out why thieves want your email address and tell you just what they can do with it if they have our name.
We want to know, have you ever had your email and password stolen? If you have, what and how did it happen?
