Another group of Missouri soldiers are headed overseas. A group of National Guard Soldiers are headed to Afghanistan as part of the 548th Transportation Company.

Governor Jay Nixon promised the soldiers their families would be cared for and their civilian jobs protected while overseas.

The detachment is based in Centertown and is leaving for a year-long deployment.

“When I was in Afghanistan last summer and the summer before, it was clear to me that our success in this area of the world depends in large part on our mobility,” Gov. Nixon said. “It depends on our ability to move people and cargo quickly, efficiently and dependably.”

The Centertown group is part of a 170-member unit based in Trenton. The unit will move both dry and refrigerated cargo and ammunition.

On Monday, Nixon said the Show-Me Heroes program has almost 1,300 civilian employers on board in Missouri.

“Employers have signed up and said if our service folks serve in another country, when they apply for a job, their application will be put on the top of the stack,” Nixon said.

The Unit will train in Fort Bliss, Texas and get final pre-deployment instruction before heading overseas.
