A Macon Elementary School student is one of the statewide winners of an earthquake awareness poster contest.

Jillian King, a 4th grader, took the top prize among fourth graders across Missouri for her poster showing the best way for people to be protected during an earthquake.

The contest was part of the "Show-Me ShakeOut" Poster contest that promotes the Great Central U.S. Shakeout, an 11-state earthquake drill that will take place on April 28th. That drill is part of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the great New Madrid earthquake of 1811-12.

Third, fourth, and fifth graders from all over Missouri took part in the competition, creating posters that promote earthquake awareness. Statewide winners have been chosen from each grade and those winners will receive an Apple iPod Shuffle from the Missouri Seismic Safety Commission and SEMA. You can view all the winning posters on SEMA's web site.

An award presentation for Jillian King will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. at Macon Elementary. Along with that presentation, a highly visual demonstration of the "Drop, Cover, Hold On" technique of self-protection will take place.
