JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- Missourians will soon be hearing more about the three-toed box turtle.  The turtle is a common sight in the Ozarks, and a southwest Missouri lawmaker wants to make it the official state reptile.

State Representative Jim Viebrock of Republic is carrying a proposal through the Legislature, because of a science class in his district.  A teacher wanted his students to learn how the Legislature works.  The students are expected to visit Jefferson City to testify about giving the turtle official status.

Viebrock says he expects one of the turtles to appear in committee hearings, but not in the House or Senate chamber where props are not allowed.
