Summer is fast approaching, at that means many families will be headed to area lakes and pools to cool off.

Today, the Knowles YMCA in Jefferson City hosted a Community Water Safety Day.

Several organizations, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division, Cole County Sheriff, and MoDOT were on hand.

Event organizers like Ronnie Phelps say the information they provide is especially important to those living in Mid-Missouri.

"We feel like we are a water community. We may not have a beach nearby, but we have the lakes, we have ponds, rivers, and of course all our swimming pools and backyard pools as well. So we want to make sure everyone has a safe Spring and safe Summer," she said.

The event also included information about sun safety, to make sure folks wear enough sunscreen and stay hydrated out in the heat.

The YMCA said they also offer scholarships for swim lessons for those who might be interested.

If you are interested, you can contact the Knowles YMCA at 761-9015 and ask for Ronnie Phelps.
