A Missouri state senator wants the gun control debate to include more responsibility for parents.

St. Louis Democrat Maria Chappelle-Nadal said she thinks parents should be required to store guns safely. She added that parents should be held accountable if their children use unsafely-stored weapons illegally.

She also said she wants to require parents to notify schools if they own guns.

"We are not trying to take away anyone's gun, period," Chapelle-Nadal said. "We're not even asking what kind of gun you have. We want the school district to be able to say, 'You know what, there are some really terrible things going on right now, and we need to be able to talk to the parent that we know they have a gun and make sure that there is security, that this gun is stored securely."

As one of less than a dozen democrats in the Senate, Chappelle-Nadal might not get much traction for her legislation.

But she is getting attention – she's scheduled to discuss it Thursday on CNN.
