It was 25 years ago today when Columbia city leaders bought a short line railroad and named it COLT.
Area dignitaries gathered at the Columbia Terminal station this morning to celebrate this historic anniversary.
Over the years, the COLT rail line became an increasingly popular way to ship materials for businesses in our region.
Traffic has increased from over 600 cars in 1988 to over 2,000 cars in recent years.
Columbia economic development officials said the rail line helped attract a number of new businesses to Mid-Missouri.
REDI President Michael Brooks said, “Having the rail and the interstate highway come together gives us a really strong network of transportation. Having this facility adds to the strength that we have in terms of working with companies.”
Last year, the Columbia Dinner Star Train started offering dinner tours on vintage passenger cars along the COLT tracks between Centralia and Columbia.
