(AP) -- SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Auditors say more than $500,000 is missing from Missouri State University's bookstore, and that amount could increase.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the total loss will not be known until the audit is completed by the end of the year.

Mark Brixey, of Ozark, resigned as bookstore director Aug. 17.

The university's chief of staff, Paul Kincaid, says Brixey would have been fired because he failed to explain the missing money or the $81,000 auditors allegedly found in his desk at the bookstore.

Brixey has not been charged with a crime. His attorney has said only that Brixey made no admission of guilt in his resignation letter.
