It's been 60 years since he wore the uniform.
But on Wednesday, a 92-year-old local veteran finally received special recognition.
Vernon Sievert received three bronze stars, medals he should have been given when he was in the Air Corps in World War II.
During a ceremony at the St. Joseph Bluffs home in Jefferson City, AVFW Colorguard presented Sievert with hose stars.
They were awarded for his service as a B-17 gunner in missions all over Europe.
His daughter says the medals are fitting, because Sievert is an all-American hero, both in the heat of battle, and in raising a family.
"He's lived his life that way.” said Margie Sievert. “He's lived his life in a way where people could shine a light on it. He had nothing to hide. He was extremely honest, and he was brave, and I never saw him make anybody feel bad."
Vernon was a bit camera shy, but did say he felt extremely honored to be recognized for his service, especially after six decades.
