The first portion of the new Route 63 and H interchange project opened today just south of Columbia.
The two new J-Turns designed to improve safety and traffic flow are located between the Discovery Parkway Interchange and Bonne Femme Creek.
With the opening of the J-Turns, the two existing cross-over intersections at Old Millers Road and South Rolling Hills Road are now permanently closed.
That eliminates the need for drivers to cross four lanes of fast-moving traffic on a four-lane divided highway.
The J-Turns are part of a larger project that includes building an interchange at Route 63 and Route H near the Columbia Regional Airport.
That interchange is scheduled to be completed in early November.
