Missouri Republicans can rest comfortably knowing they'll control the state Senate -- even before a single ballot is cast this fall.
Half the Senate stands for re-election every two years. The party has clinched the majority thanks to a combination of GOP senators who are not on the ballot this year and others running uncontested. Republicans stand to keep at least 18 seats in the 34-member chamber.
Among those clinching early were Majority Leader Tom Dempsey and Sen. Eric Schmitt, who faced no opposition in their primaries.
House Republicans are nearly two-thirds of the way toward keeping control of that 163-member chamber. In more than 50 districts, the GOP candidate faces no opposition or a third-party candidate. More than two-dozen Democrats don't have a Republican opponent in the general election.
