Police searching for man who pulled her to the ground

A woman was assaulted on University Avenue while walking home alone.

Officers were dispatched on Wednesday at 1:42 a.m. Upon arrival, the woman told them a man of Asian descent approached her. He passed her, but then grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her to the ground.

The man then ran east on University Avenue and got into a red sport utility vehicle. He drove south on William Street.

The woman had a minor injury to her back and refused medical attention. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION:
Clean-shaven Asian male, 5'8" to 5'9", stocky build, with dark trimmed hair. Last seen wearing a white t-shirt and shorts.

With the school year right around the corner and the natural increase in activity in the Downtown and East Campus areas, the Columbia Police Department would like to remind the community of some simple safety tips:

- Use the buddy system when walking or running, especially at night.

- If you can't use the buddy system, call a friend to let them know what you are doing and then call them back to let them know you have arrived safely

- If you carry keys with you, keep a key handy to use as a possible weapon

- Scream loudly to bring attention to yourself

- Never advertise your personal belonging (phone, money, etc.)

- Be alert and aware of your surroundings

- Avoid high crime areas

- Don't let alcohol or drugs cloud your judgment

- Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, LEAVE!

- Do not wear headphones when walking or running at night or in an unfamiliar/unpopulated area.
