(AP) -- ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) -- Police are investigating after skeletal remains of a human left foot were found inside a shoe along the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Charles County.

Authorities told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that motorcyclists on Thursday noticed the shoe with a black sock sticking out, gave it a closer look and realized remains of a foot were inside.

The shoe was a men's dress shoe, brown suede and size 11 1/2. No other remains were found in the area.

The foot was sent to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's office. Police plan to do DNA testing and will look into missing person cases.
