JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- Update: 07.12.12 11:10 a.m.

KRCG talked to the Jefferson City Fire Department, and they say the State Fire Marshal is investigating.

What is known right now is that the fire started near a back wheel.

The fire spread spread from the wheel area, to the fuel tank, to the interior,” said Bob Rennick, Fire Chief of the Jefferson City Fire Department. ”By the time the fire department got here, where the car was parked, the vehicle was fully involved"

State engineers are now looking into possible structural damage to that part of the garage from the extreme heat.

Black smoke billowed over the Missouri Capitol after a vehicle caught fire in a nearby parking garage.

The fire occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday as state employees were arriving to work. Two Jefferson City fire trucks responded to the blaze, and police diverted traffic around the Capitol.

The burning car appeared to be a sport utility vehicle or minivan that was parked in a garage just west of the Capitol building. Flames shot up toward the concrete ceiling of the garage, but it was not immediately clear if there was any structural damage.
