(AP) -- SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Police twice responded to a family's Springfield home the day before one of the residents is accused of fatally shooting his sleeping 14-year-old stepson.

The Springfield News-Leader reported that 64-year-old William Jones was charged Friday with first-degree murder in Thursday's killing of Trevor Reynolds.

Bond has been set at $250,000. No attorney is listed for Jones in online court record.

A probable cause statement says that when police responded the first time, Jones was upset that Trevor had a friend over. The boy's mother left with the youths, and Trevor returned later to apologize.

The statement says Jones later threatened to kill his stepson. Police responded again and attempted to remove all the firearms.

After spending the night in a hotel, Trevor returned, fell asleep and was killed.
