Volunteers needed for State Summer Games

The Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games will bring more than 3,500 athletes and coaches from across the state to Columbia.  This state-level event takes place May 29 to June 1, on the University of Missouri and Columbia College campuses as well as at Town & Country Lanes.
 
Volunteers play an enormously important role in the success of this event.  The volunteer locations with the greatest need are as follows:
 
TUESDAY, MAY 29
MU Walton Track (Track and Field)
Awards (12 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Timers & Pickers (1 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Standing Long Jump (3 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Softball Throw (3 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
 
Town & Country Lanes (Bowling)
Lane Assistants (12:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
 
WEDNESDAY, MAY 30
MU Walton Track (Track and Field)
Running Event Assistants (7 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.) and (11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Running Long Jump Assistants (8 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
Throwing Event Assistants (8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
Awards (7 am – 10 am) & (2:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
 
Town & Country Lanes (Bowling)
Lane Assistants (7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.)
 
MU Student Recreation Complex (Aquatics)
Aquatics Assistants (11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
 
Most volunteer shifts include a minimum four-hour commitment, and each volunteer receives a complimentary T-shirt along with a very rewarding experience. Go to www.somo.org/summergames for a complete listing of volunteer jobs and shifts.  Volunteers can sign up online to reserve a specific job and volunteers will also be admitted the day of the event at each venue. Special Olympics Missouri is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 15,000 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.  Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy as they participate in the sharing of gifts and friendship with their fellow athletes, their family and friends, and communities across Missouri.
