Columbia city council members are expected to pass an ordinance tonight that would eliminate and create dozens of city positions.

The personnel changes are part of an overall plan to save millions of dollars in Columbia’s annual budget.

The proposed ordinance would affect employees in the departments of Health and Human Services, Finance, Law and Human Resources.

Mayor Bob McDavid said the proposed amendment to this year’s general budget would be a huge benefit to Columbia employees and taxpayers.

McDavid said, “They want to see that each dollar goes as far as it can.  They want to see each dollar buy as much service as it can.  We want to make sure that our employees are paid as much as they deserve.  All of that requires re-evaluating productivity and expense.  I think that’s what you are seeing in this proposal.”

The City of Columbia has more than 1,300 employees.

McDavid said the proposed ordinance dealing with personnel changes would help retain some of the city’s best workers.
