A former clerk for the Cole County Sheriff's Department is charged with stealing from the department.

Gina A. Freeman of Jefferson City faces a felony stealing charge for taking more than $500.

Sheriff Greg White says it was the jail staff who discovered the money was missing. He would not give specifics about how much money was taken, or what his office is doing to avoid future problems. White says he cannot comment on the case because it is a personnel matter.

Freeman bonded out of jail Thursday evening.

Before Freeman lost her job as a clerk, she was responsible for handling inmate bonds and accounts.

This is not the first problem like this for the department. In November 2011, another employee was charged with stealing thousands of dollars and accused of using the department's credit card for personal use.

Deborah Thomas pleaded guilty, spent 30 days on house arrest , and is on probation as she pays restitution.
