Nationwide, flood damage now exceeds $6 billion.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency
says flooding is one of the most common hazards we come across.
Flash floods can happen within just minutes of a heavy rain, or a dam or levee failure---and most of the time they can happen on your way to work or school when you're least expecting.
FEMA says it doesn't matter where you live, small streams and ditches that appear harmless when dry can be major hazards during flood conditions.
FEMA has a few tips to deal with floods.
You should always have an emergency kit with some drinkable water, food, and batteries.
Also, have a family communication plan.
