LINN -- A communications instructor at Linn State Technical College is one of the 30 finalists to compete for the opportunity to live in Major League Baseball’s Fan Cave in New York for the entire baseball season.
Nick Straatman is leaving Tuesday for spring training in Arizona.
That’s where he'll be competing in a series of interactive challenges and interviews.
From there, the final group that will begin the 2012 season in the MLB fan cave in New York will be chosen.
If he's part of that group, Straatmann will begin the season in the fan cave with the goal of watching all 2,430 MLB games on a large wall of big-screen TVs.
He’ll document his experiences online through videos, blogs and social media.
Straatman said he's the man for the job.
"My whole life I’ve wanted to be a part of major league baseball and just following the game isn't enough for me,” Straatman said. “I want to be immersed in the game. I've followed it my whole life, I’ve written about it, I have a book on the game. It's just my life passion, so it would be a dream come true for me."
According to MLB’s website last year's fan cave winner, Ryan Wagner, was selected by the Orioles to be the new Oriole park announcer at Camden Yards -- just the third in the ballpark's 20-year history.
