University of Missouri curators have come to an agreement for next year’s tuition, and it’s less than what was originally recommended.

Monday afternoon, curators agreed to raise tuition at the system’s four campuses this fall by an average of 3% for Missouri residents. This is less than half of what leaders proposed earlier this month.

The original proposal called for the following increases:

Columbia: 7.5%
Rolla: 9%
St. Louis: 8.2%
Kansas City: 3%

While the lower increase may lower frustration from students, it’s also expected to ease the anger from Governor Jay Nixon. State law limits annual tuition increases to the rate of inflation, which is at 3%. If it goes above that, the university would need to get a waiver from the state Department of Higher Education.

However, the reduced tuition increase means cuts will come somewhere. It’s likely the university will eliminate between 200 and 245 full-time jobs that are either vacant or currently filled.

The University of Missouri curators are meeting Monday to consider raising tuition at the system's four campuses.

The special meeting comes after the governing board postponed consideration of a tuition increase three weeks ago.

The curators will meet by video teleconference along with new university president Tim Wolfe.

The proposed increases include a 9-percent increase at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla and a 7.5 percent increase in Columbia.

But that proposal came before Gov. Jay Nixon agreed to use $40 million from a nationwide settlement with mortgage lenders for higher education.
