COLUMBIA, MO. -- Parents in the Columbia Public School District took advantage of an alternative to finding expensive care for their younger children on this first snow day of the year.
District Administrators offered a Snow Club at 3 elementary schools for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
It was the first day of the pilot program with just 60 spots at each of the 3 schools, although children from any school can attend.
Parents must provide transportation and a sack lunch.
The cost is $15 a day per student.
Parents signed up in advance for the program that has a waiting list.
Columbia Public Schools Spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said, “This is a great opportunity to have a safe, constructive place for kids to be on days when school is not in session. We have lots of fun activities planned for kids. We have arts and crafts and physical education and games and just some fun times for kids.”
If the Snow Club program is a success, Baumstark hopes it will be able to expand to more schools.
Today’s Snow Clubs were held at Mill Creek, West Boulevard and Derby elementary schools between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
