COLUMBIA, MO. -- A man scammed some people in front of Columbia’s Old Navy store.
The man impersonated a Salvation Army bell ringer.
The real bell ringer was on break when the man stood by the charity’s unattended red kettle and asked people for money in his hand.
Real bell ringers only accept money in their red kettles.
Salvation Army Regional Coordinator Major K.K. Mathews said, “It’s a scam when a person is asking for money and asking for you to put it in their hand. It’s not legitimate.”
Old Navy employees filed a report on the bell ringing impersonator with Columbia Police.
The male suspect is on the loose with an unknown amount of stolen cash.
This year’s Red Kettle Campaign donations are down in both Jefferson City and Columbia.
