A Boone County sheriff’s deputy and his canine companion received a special honor recently in St. Louis.

Corporal Chris Smith and his K9 partner, Utz, were recognized for Outstanding Service by the Missouri Police Canine Association.

"I'm very appreciative of the award," said Deputy Smith in a news release.

Smith has served with the department for 14 years while the German Shepherd has been there nearly 10.

"Utz is a fantastic partner and he loves his job protecting and serving the citizens of Boone County," Smith said of his crime-fighting partner.

The Canine Association picked the mid-Missouri duo from hundreds throughout the state.

Smith and Utz have tracked and apprehended more than 60 individuals while working together. They’ve also participated in numerous drug arrests and have given many demonstrations at schools, service organizations, and community events.
