JEFFERSON CITY -- Halloween came early for some trick-or-treaters in the Capitol City Sunday night.

Trunks, tables and even barrels were filled with all sorts of goodies for Trunk –or-Treat at the Fairgrounds which was hosted by the Jefferson City Jaycees and Hy-Vee.

The event was launched in 2009 so area kids could have a safe place to trick or treat on Halloween.

All of the proceeds are donated to local law enforcement for their "Operation Toys" event.

"First off, this provides a safe trick-or-treating environment for kids, I know that sometimes that is a concern for parents so we are here, we are all together, we are all local businesses and local non profit organizations and we want to make sure kids have a great Halloween,” 2011 chairman of the Jefferson City Jaycees board Nicole Buckley said.  “Secondly, this helps raise money to help other local kids have a great Christmas."

With a dollar donation, kids 12 and under got to fill a bag will sugar filled treats, coupons and toys.

Organizers estimated that there were nearly 3,000 little ghouls, goblins, and other costumed characters at the event.
