A federal judge says Linn State Technical College's drug-testing plan for new students will remain on hold.
The program calls for screening first-year students for cocaine, methamphetamines, oxycodone and other drugs. The ACLU filed suit against the plan in September.
U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey granted a
temprorary restraining order
in September and extended the restraining order on Tuesday through Nov. 8.
When Linn State Technical College first announced the policy, they said it would provide a
healthy and safe collegiate envrionment
for students and teachers. But the ACLU filed suit and said the drug testing violates fourth amendment rights.
Students had mixed feelings about the drug testing, with some saying they felt violated and others believing it was important because of the types of equipment students at Linn Tech use.
Do you think there should be drug testing of college students or do you think it violates the 4th amendment?
