SIRTE, Libya (AP) -- There's celebration on the streets of Libya's capital, amid reports that Moammar Gadhafi is dead.

The information minister in Libya's new government says Gadhafi was killed today when revolutionary forces overwhelmed his hometown of Sirte (sert). He says he's been told of Gadhafi's death by soldiers who said they saw the body.

But other officials in the transitional government say they're still trying to verify what happened.

As the anti-Gadhafi forces swept into Sirte -- the last major bastion of resistance -- a NATO airstrike blasted a fleeing convoy that fighters said was carrying Gadhafi.

Al-Jazeera TV has shown video of a man resembling Gadhafi, lying dead or severely wounded. The man is bleeding from the head and stripped to the waist, as fighters roll him over on the pavement.

In the capital, cries of "God is Great" rang out, amid celebratory gunfire. Cars honked their horns and hugged each other.

And in Sirte, the former rebels celebrated the city's fall after weeks of fighting, by firing endless rounds into the sky and singing the national anthem.
