On this day in 1977, the world's first passenger super-sonic jet service began with the Concorde made its first landing at Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

The maiden voyage was made by Air France flying from Toulouse, France in 3 hours 45 minutes.

The voyage came after 19 months of delays caused by residents' concerns about noise, but tests showed the noise levels to be less than the legal ceiling and significantly less than the typical wide-bodied jets of the day.

Also on this day in 1987, the stock market crashed as the Dow Jones Industrial average plunged 508 points, which was 22.6 percent of its value.

Reverberations from the crash were felt worldwide, as the Tokyo Exchange opened down the following day, London experienced record declines and The Hong Kong Market closed for a week.

Analysts blamed the stock market crash on budget and trade deficits, the falling dollar, rising interest rates and tensions in the Persian Gulf.

They also blamed large computer-driven transactions.
